We Can Think and Grow Rich

Napoleon Hill stated in his book ‘Think and Grow Rich’ that “…more gold has been mined from the minds of men than from the earth. What you sow you reap. Success comes to those who are success conscious. Fortune gravitates to the man whose mind is prepared to attract them, just as surely as water gravitates to the ocean. The human mind is constantly attracting vibrations, which harmonize with that which dominates the mind. Any thought, idea, plan or purpose, which one holds in one’s mind, attracts a host of relatives, and adds their relatives to its own force and grows until it becomes the dominating and motivating master of the individual in whose mind it has been housed. Somewhere in your make up there lies sleeping the seed of achievement which if roused and put into action would carry you to heights such as you may never have hoped to attain.”
This motivational book took Hill 20 years to complete. During that time, he interviewed men who had become successful with little money and humble beginnings. He wanted to know why some could achieve great success while others failed.
The book is available at almost every bookstore in the USA and prices range from 6.99 more or less.
It isn’t a book to be read in its entirety at one setting, but rather a section each morning or night so you can think about the content.
The story of Harlan Sanders from Corbin Kentucky, or Laurel County Kentucky interested me immensely because I too am from Laurel County. I was born and raised 15 miles north of Corbin in a small town called London. Each year the Kentucky Fried Chicken Festival is hosted there. Although Sanders lived and worked in Corbin, London is the capitol of Laurel County.
Harlan Sanders was 65 years old, and running a small motel and restaurant when the interstate came through and put him out of business. Since he leased the property, he reaped nothing from the sale.
The man had never paid Social Security, nor managed to put money back for a rainy day. He was penniless.
However, he was not one to dwell on his problems. Being a man of action, he took his chicken-breading recipe, climbed into his beat up jalopy, and headed north. He intended to sell it. He succeeded, and this gave him the funds to start over.
Back up and running in another location, he was determined to create stability and security for his family. At this point, he decided to franchise. He asked $10,000.00 from each person who wanted to open a KFC restaurant. In addition, he claimed 5 cents per each chicken the restaurant sold, for as long as it remained in business. The prospective restaurant owner had to also build a structure whose architecture was dictated by Sanders. |

Once the contracts were signed, the new recruit came to Corbin Kentucky and went through a period of intensive training. He/she did everything from washing dishes to frying the chicken in order to learn everything about the chicken business.
Back then a nickel per chicken did not sound like much. However, look at all the KFC restaurants in the world today. Although Harlan Sanders was destitute, he was still able to come up with a multi million-dollar idea. The moral of the story is “never give up.” When things seem hopeless, look for windows of opportunities. A good idea at the right time, regardless of how much money you have, can reap big rewards.
