It Is No Mystery

Graphic sex scenes, not good in mysteries. The focus is on the mystery. Affectionate dinners ok, cuddling, etc. Stop before intimacy. Let the reader use his/her imagination.

No sexual slurs. Do it seldom if at all, and only to make a point. No more than 2-3 times in the entire book.

Although true life may be reflected, none of us like to get side tracked with cursing. Don't fill your pages with needless chitchat that distracts rather than adds to the novel. If you have to use a curse word to show frustration make it rare. Before you use a bad word, make sure there isn't something equally effective that you could use instead.

Your hero should be clean, upstanding, morally sound, dutiful, and loyal to a fault. Let him be a model for young and old alike. We are desperately in need of heroes. But even real life heroes have their shortcomings.

About slang words. Instead of Yeah, make it Yes. etc. Don't use "gonna" in dialog, make it going. Show that yes means Yes, and no, means No.

Don't repeat things. Once is enough. More is repetitious.  Example: "Jane headed to her bed. She was tired. It had been a hectic day and she was exhausted. Sliding beneath the sheets, she yawned ." How many times did we say Jane was tired?

Use italics sparingly.

Tell the story in third person view point when possible.

“You got a minute?” or “Do you have a minute?”  sounds better than “Got a minute?” Sometimes the shortened version works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Watch for pet words. We all have them. Watch for too many words like: and, had, that.

Watch for double words "she had had enough." Can't you find another way to say that?

Make every word count.

Speak it. Does it sound right? Would you say it that way under those circumstances?

It’s no mystery, just common sense.

Tighten Your Text

Once you think your manuscript is complete, try reading it out loud. If you stumble over the text something is wrong with it. Consider this: Use short paragraphs with simple language, get rid of unclear wording, . redundant language, and overused phrases. Get the point across without wasting words. Be concise and direct. Make each work count. Avoid unnecessary jargon.

Tightening words can make the document shorter, but this is good. You don’t want to bore the reader with rambling, or redundant sentences. If your document begins to sound choppy then you may have tightened it too much.

Three short sentences or less per paragraph is ideal. It gives the reader a break to visualize the scenes.

Cut words not essential to understanding the message being communicated. Lengthy stories told by a character might be shortened. “S/He said” statements can be eliminated.

Sentences with a great deal of repetition can

be shortened. “Okay, okay, okay…” can be changed to one “Okay.”

Look for overused words:

“she knew that that was what he meant.”

“he had had enough.

“John was with Jack and Jen and Mark and Tim.”

“Marge had to go to work.”
