What is Print on Demand?

Print on demand is a new mass printing technology. It affords the self publishing author the opportunity to have their manuscript published faster, and more economically.

Before print on demand was invented self publishing authors had to purchase a standard printing of books. A normal number would have been 5,000 books.

The self publisher had to store the books, and market them. Imagine that the self publishing author paid only $2.00 each for his/her books and you can begin to get an idea of what the cost could amount to, with editing, typesetting, book cover design, shipping, taxes, and sometimes storage. A reasonable amount might have been $13,000. A writer had to be reasonably wealthy to afford such expense. The sad part of all is that once the writer sold to his family and friends he had cleared out from 100-500 books and still had the rest in storage. What eventually happened to them? They became damaged from dust, weather or rodents.

Today, printing costs have gone up, lumber has gone up in price and so has paper. The same book might cost $3.50 each to bulk print now. You might be able to find a printer who will print 2,000 copies of the book instead of the normal number of 5,000. Chances are good that your price would go up per book when you reduce the number of books. In addition, you still have the expenses of typesetting, editing, book cover design, shipping, taxes, and perhaps storage.

Print on Demand means printing the book when it is ordered. The printer can print 1 book or 5,000 and have it to the buyer in a week. Authors can order small shipments to sell and not have to store a lot. The money they spend can buy a better book cover, editor, and other things that are important when you self publish a book.
