Optimizing Your Web SiteA Search Engine judges web sites by the Meta Tags they use and links that are pointing to them. For those of you who don't understand what a Meta Tag is, or how to use Meta Tags to optimize your web page, read on. Meta Tags should appear on the header section of your web page. Check this out by viewing the source of your web page. You can view the source by clicking on `view and then source,' in Internet Explorer. You can also open your web page in Windows notepad to view and edit your Meta Tags. Your Meta Tags should look similar to the example below: <html> Explaining the Function of Meta TagsEach Meta Tag comes with rules. Something similar to the Meta Tag example above should appear on each new web page you design. TITLE - Use no more than 80 characters. Clip a short sentence from your page content that describes your web site purpose. The sample above is a book publishing site. META NAME = KEYWORDS: This Meta Tag contains keywords or short phrases that describe your web site to search engines. Once the search engine understand what your Meta Tags tell them, the Search Engine helps you sell your product or service. The Search Engine indexes your web page under the proper catagory so they can relay your information back to those searching for your product. You might have the best and most reasonably priced product in the world, but if people don't know about it, they can't buy it. There are numerous places on the web where you can find a keyword generator. My favorite is Google (https://adwords.google.com/select/main?cmd=KeywordSandbox). Use 20 keywords or 255 characters for the Search Engines. Some Search Engines will not index your web site if you use too many keywords. Spaces and punctuation counts in that 255 space area. Once you get to Google Adwords web site, type a word that describes your product or service into the space provided (example: `publish'). Google will generate a list of keywords and phrases for you. Study the keywords and phrases in the example above. A comma is inserted between each keyword or phrase without spaces in between. Although Search Engines read keywords with or without a space inserted between them, you waste character count by uses spaces. Note: Make a list of your keywords and write short articles on the main ones to use on your web page. This helps your keyword density (keyword density=the number of times a keyword appears on your web page). Use repetition to repeat keywords in your content. When writing web content redundancy is good practice. Once you post your articles, the required Meta Tags such as title, keywords, and description, should paint a picture of your web site. META NAME=DESCRIPTION: Use no more than 200 characters, including spaces and punctuation. Describe your service or product. Use some of your keywords in the description. : META NAME=ROBOTS: Use this Meta tag to communicate with the search spider. In the example above I am telling the search engine to index my page, then follow my links to index those pages too. META NAME=REVISIT: This Meta tag is making an appointment with the search spider to come back in 7 days. By doing this, the web site will stay updated. This is not a not a required Meta tag. META NAME=EMAIL: The webmaster should put their email address here. If you maintain your own web pages, then your email address should appear here. This is not a required Meta tag. META NAME=AUTHOR: The webmaster should put their name here. This is not a not a required Meta tag. META NAME=PUBLISHER: Your company name goes here. This is not a required Meta tag. META NAME=COPYRIGHT: This is a copyright notice. It became your design the moment you created it. Although you may have used a generic web page design, content and graphics are bound to be different. Therefore, your copyright date should be listed in this space. This is not a required Meta tag. Testing Your PageOnce your web page is online, it's time to test it. Visit Submit Express and take advantage of their free tools (http://www.submitexpress.com). Click on Tools on the top menu, and then on Meta Tag & Keyword Analyzer. Type your web address in the space that says "Type your URL below," leave the second field blank, and click Submit. The information that is returned by the Meta Tag & Keyword Analyzer Tool is easy to understand. If your Meta tag information needs work the text will appear in red. You should tweak it until the text turns green and your score goes up to 80% or better. If you need to tweak your keywords go to the bottom of the results page and check your keyword density. Make sure the keywords that describe your product are listed there. If they are not showing up as often as they should, go back and rewrite your articles so the keywords come up more often. When you finish tweaking your web page, click on the Free Submit button on the top menu and submit your site to the search engines.
