My father always told me, "If you keep a positive mental attitude, you can accomplish most things that you set your mind to do. But if you complain about the obstacles that get in your way or the reasons why you can't do something," he just points at his head. "It's all mental." My father never talked much about what he wished he could do. He simply set his mind to it and got it done. If I learned one thing from him about accomplishment, it is to keep that positive mental attitude and to believe that I can do whatever I set my mind to do.

John Blakely

John Blakely was born January 28, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois to DeLos and Agnes Blakely. They lived in Harvey, Illinois a suburb on the south side. DeLos was killed in a train accident in August 1945. Agnes (known as Marie) remarried in April 1948 to John Schmid. The couple had four more children, Robert, Kathleen, Margaret Mary, and Maryellen.

John attended and graduated from Ascension Grammar School in Harvey and Brother Rice High School in Chicago. He attended Thornton Junior College ( eventually became Thornton Community College) for two years but didn't graduate. He attended and received BAS and MS degrees in Management from Troy State University. He received a Certified Fitness Trainer certification from International Sports Sciences Association. He was certified a Project Management Professional by the Project Management Institute. He is a certified Level 1 coach and National Level Official by USA Track and Field. He is a certified Level 1 coach by USA Cycling. He has taught undergraduate courses at Troy State University and Miami University (Ohio).

In 1963 he joined the U.S. Air Force and retired in 1983. During his service he served tours at Niagara Falls IAP, NY; Kincheloe AFB, MI, K.I. Sawyer AFB, MI; RAF Upper Heyford, UK; Moody AFB, GA; Osan AB, ROK; and Moody AFB, GA. Other assignments include Custer AFS, MI; Hamilton AFB, CA; Eglin AFB, FL; Tyndall AFB, FL; Chanute AFB, IL; Ramstein AB, Germany; Homestead AFB, FL; Langley AFB, VA; and Shaw AFB, SC.

He has always enjoyed music and has performed in choirs and as a cantor at church services. He says his greatest inspiration in music came from his Mother and Sister Mary Theresia, OP. He played the clarinet in the Brother Rice HS band and also learned the alto saxophone. He sang rock and roll music with small groups in Niagara Falls. He taught himself to play guitar.

John's fascination with motivation started as he approached the end of his Air Force career, made adjustments in his life and aimed at finishing his formal education. He noticed that there was no such thing as THE way to become motivated to accomplish large endeavors.

As he drew from his own life, he also watched others. He saw differences and similarities. After his time as a student, the drive to finish and excel at scholastics transferred to other facets of his life.

His retirement from the Air Force opened numerous doors for observation and learning. He developed an extremely broad group of skills working in highly diverse companies and industries. His study of motivation and behavior allowed the closing of the gaps that many felt existed between those companies and industries.

Using motivation in athletics and training is where the greatest understanding occurred. His desire to be more competitive in his own events brought in-depth study. As he learned his own "triggers" he also observed others and saw how other "triggers" were providing similar outcomes. He views the acceptance of individual differences between people as his greatest break through.

John Blakely has limited political convictions. He believes in individual freedoms but is far from being a liberal.

Testimonials

Hi John. My legs are actually not hurting at all after the workout today. I think the stuff that we were working on today made all the difference. So, I'll have to continue to work on my technique. Thanks for all the help, you really make all the difference. Also, I took your advice and got a smoothie when we left and came home and made some pasta for carbs and I feel a whole lot better. Next time I will be sure to eat breakfast before we come to bother you.

To whom it may concern,

I signed up at Gold's Gym Colerain Ave in November of 2004. At this same time I contracted with Beyond Fitness for a Personnel Trainer to work with me since this was all new to me.

I was lucky when John was assigned as my personnel trainer. He is very knowledgeable about what he does and was able to convey to me the correct ways to obtain my goals. I was amazed at how quickly I progressed with John's help. He pushed me to a level I did not think I could obtain.

I believe that due to John's involvement and his true caring about people I no longer have knee pain and have truly decreased the pain in my back not to mention I am much stronger and full of energy.

I would recommend John as a Personnel Trainer. He is truly a person who cares about the right way to do things and you are not just another number.

Beyond Fitness
Attn: Matt Yellom

Dear Mr. Yellom,

I would expect that you demand a certain level of experience, commitment, and dedication from all of your trainers. I've had personal trainers at other gyms, so as a customer of Beyond Fitness I definitely had high expectations of the training programs being offered. I've had the opportunity to work with several of your trainers at Gold's Gym and only one to date is worthy of any sort of commendation. That trainer is John Blakely.

I bought a training package from Beyond Fitness in August 2004. At the time I specifically stated that the only time I was available to train was at 5 am in the morning and was told that it would not be a problem and that trainers were available at that time. From the beginning it was a nightmare. Consistently, the trainer assigned to me would not show up. Management changed, another trainer was assigned and again the trainer would come for a couple of sessions and then never show up again. No courtesy call, no explanation, nothing.

Then one day I had a message on my answering machine from John. He was appalled at the way I'd been treated and asked if he could train me. I explained that the only time I was available was at 5 am. He said that wasn't a problem for him and we set a schedule.

My goals were pretty simple, build strength and train for a marathon. John pushed me from our 1st session until our last. My back, arms, and abs are stronger than they've ever been and my thighs are rock hard. My results with him are much better than with any other trainer. After seeing what I'd achieved with him, I also asked him to work on other areas not related to my marathon training, specifically triceps. Again great results! He also offered help with nutrition, marathon training schedules, etc.

As I said earlier, I've had the opportunity to work with a variety of trainers at Beyond Fitness and John is by far the only one on staff that took my personal training seriously and to a higher level. He's knowledgeable, experienced, and committed to his clients. He personally is the only reason I might ever again consider another training contract with your company.

Best Regards,

Debbie Bonfer

Dear Mr. Yellom:

John Blakely has been my personal trainer since last November when I joined Gold's Gym. I had no idea how to use the machines so I thought it might be helpful to have John show me the proper way to use them. Before I joined Gold's, I was mainly doing cardio on the treadmill.

Usually one day a week since last November, I was scheduled for a half hour of training with John. He has been more than helpful teaching me how to use each machine and also the proper technique for lifting weights. I am 47 years old and I feel that John has been important in keeping me on the right track in staying healthy and in good shape. John has not only worked with me for that short weekly half hour session - he's also mapped out a program for me to stay in shape from week to week. He's constantly challenging my muscles with different exercises and increasing the weight amount to the max that I can handle. Without John's coaching, I don't think I would have stuck with strength training for this long. Until John came along, I didn't understand the importance of strength training along with cardio and proper diet and how you need all three to achieve success. He's also taught me about how stretching is essential to avoid injury. Our training sessions are always fun and different each week.

Over the months that I've known John, I've often seen him in the gym answering questions, and always willing to help people out on the machines. I am proud to know him as a friend and would highly recommend him as a trainer.

Sincerely,
Karen Jacob

***.

As a 37 year old male I took a good look at my self in the mirror and didn't like what I saw. I was too fat and out of shape for a man of my age. I knew it was time for a change, but really didn't know the correct way of achieving the results I wanted. I'd never really "worked out" in a gym before and was quite intimidated by the equipment and overall atmosphere. The use of a personal trainer (John) was the best decision I'd make second only to actually joining the gym. I was very please with the success I had with John. He was able to build my self-confidence while subtlety pushing me harder and farther than I thought I could go. His desire to educate me and really help me understand what I was doing and why I was doing it proved invaluable to my self-esteem. His positive words and motivating drive helped build my self-confidence and was the driving force in helping me come to the point of saying "I love to work out". Without John's words of wisdom, positive reinforcement and personal drive to educate me I don't think I would be as far along as I am today.
